November 6, 2015 • By

It’s time for another Stylish Traveler interview – and I’m excited.

To celebrate #FollowFriday, I’ll be posting occasional Friday Q&A’s with bloggers, artists, interior designers or other creative types.  This time, I’m interviewing gallery owner Gillian Bryce of Gillian Bryce Fine Art.

Modern Moorish Style with Villa Maroc’s Deganit Cohen

June 19, 2015 • By

The shop’s colorful facade got my attention as we drove past, and despite a tight schedule I managed to persuade my husband to turn the car around, drop me across the street and set up a meeting time for later in the day.  It was the right thing to do!

Villa Maroc is bright, colorful and filled with layer upon layer of visual goodness.  I needed to slow down to take it all in.  A charming lady (who I later discovered was the owner’s mother) let me know that céramiques were discounted 20%.  Everything – on the floors, the walls, the chairs, the tables, in baskets and boxes and bowls – clamored for my attention.

Sudak, Crimea, Ukraine – on the Black Sea

Several years ago I had the opportunity to travel through Crimea, the exact region in Ukraine that, as of today, has been taken over by Russian troops. I was leading economic development workshops on building a sustainable tourism industry in underdeveloped Tatar communities.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Foreshadowing

August 3, 2013 • By

This is one of my favorite photos – I just wish I’d been shooting at a higher resolution at the time.  This is a kitchen shot of the chef and his assistants at Otel Variete in Florence, Italy.  The only thing it really foreshadowed was a fantastic dinner of regional Italian food, in large quantities…and a fun performance on the restaurant’s stage.

Happy Birthday Frank Lloyd Wright

June 8, 2013 • By

I’m so excited to celebrate Frank Lloyd Wright’s birthday this evening at a once-in-a-lifetime event at his amazing masterpiece, Fallingwater. We’re packing up now after two great days at the Bedford Springs Resort nestled in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains. (Don’t worry, more about this vintage American resort in a future Hotel Love post.). Tonight, we’ll join a group of opera and architecture lovers at Fallingwater, for cocktails and a performance of Shining Brow, the opera about FLW’s ill-fated love affair with a client. This is such a rare opportunity to see a performance in a unique landmark of American culture. Thanks to the Pittsburgh Opera Company for dreaming it up! More later.
