Ancestral Portait

Travel can jolt you out of the mundane. Inspire you.  As a travel blogger and pattern designer, I wander the globe, looking at things in a specific way, hoping to create something new from the colors and shapes I see or the emotions I feel as I’m exposed to different light.

My ancestors were travelers, too.  They traveled to create new lives.  And when they packed, they carried only the things that mattered.

Roses, for instance.

RIP George Jones, Faithful Roadtrip Companion

April 27, 2013 • By

He stopped loving her today…
They placed a wreath upon his door…

So sad to hear that my faithful traveling companion (unbeknownst to him of course) died yesterday. But it seems fitting that I should be on a road trip.

My sister and I listened to many George Jones songs on our famous “Driving and Crying” cross-country trips in the past.

We’ll miss you George – and we’ll keep listening.

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERAYou can’t always read a smile.  In this picture, I’m smiling – but why?  Well, the truth is, in this photo,  I’ve been caught in the act…

I was lucky enough to be a guest, a few years ago, at a reception in the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, Italy.  (If you know your art history, you’ve already guessed what I was caught looking at!)

3 Things I Learned From a Drunken Bus Driver

February 19, 2013 • By

We didn’t overpower him or wrestle him to the ground.  But with the help of another passenger on our tour bus, my husband and I did have to take the keys from the driver, commandeer the vehicle and find our way back to the remote French country house where we were staying.  Along the way, as you might imagine, I picked up a few travel safety tips.

Coolest Taxi Ride Ever – Venice, Italy

Venice Water Taxi Driver

Venice Water Taxi Driver

He picked me up near the Giardini on a damp, gray day in Venice.  I’d been enjoying the artwork at La Biennale without the crowds, as it was the end of the season and starting to get cold.

The rain had sent a handful of visitors scurrying back to their pensiones, but I’d waited it out.  I had always wanted to visit the Venice Biennale and here I was, not about to let a little more water ruin the moment.

As his boat approaches, Amy Winehouse is singing “Love is a Losing Game” at top volume.

Find Deals (& Friends) at Scott’s Antique Market in Atlanta

February 10, 2013 • By

I just spent some time in Atlanta, Georgia again this weekend.  This time it was for the awesome Scott’s Antiques Market that happens monthly at a convention-type facility just south of the city.  A few truths I can tell you about Atlanta:  1) there will undoubtedly be awful traffic;  2) the Atlanta airport is top notch and one of my favorites anywhere, and 3) you will always meet great people!
