Last year my friends McLaine and Gigi and I met up in the Florida Keys for a girl’s week away from it all. Gigi flew from snowy London and arrived in her stylish fur boots and winter coat – but it didn’t take her long to change into beach wear. McLaine and I didn’t have to travel quite so far, but it was still nice to get away to warmer weather. And the place didn’t disappoint!
I love it when a hotel/resort has its own sense of place and Tranquility Bay in Marathon is all about classic, Old Florida charm. White cottages, pointy roofs, gingerbread cutouts and deep verandas adorn the property, which is extensive and circles around, past palm trees and tropical flowers and sandy paths, to beachfront dining just steps from the Gulf of Mexico. Two swimming pools are available – one kid friendly, the other reserved for adults, which is a nice touch. My friends swam within the first hour, even in a light Florida rain.
The resort offers two- and three-bedroom cottages, which is why it’s an ideal choice for a group of girls, or a family, or two couples traveling together. There is a decent white table cloth restaurant on the property (Butterfly Cafe), and a thatched-roof tiki bar with beach food, next to the water. Plus, Marathon is located almost in the middle of the Keys, making it a good home base for exploring in either direction.
There are lots of onsite activities, too, including diving, snorkeling and fishing charters, as well as boat rentals.
We found our two-story cottage charming and comfortable. A large master suite and two good-sized bedrooms are all done up in white tile and bleached furniture and beach-style accessories. The kitchen is fully stocked with dishes and pans, although we didn’t use anything but the coffee maker and the toaster. Large french doors upstairs and downstairs open out onto personal porches, where we lounged around in our pajamas, drinking joe, catching up on gossip and planning our explorations.
The staff was friendly and helpful when needed, but mostly out of sight. We saw other guests, but never felt crowded.
I just received an email from Tranquility Bay offering seasonal specials and I’m tempted to run away again. Maybe I’ll tempt someone else to, in any case.
